About Trekboer Traditional South African Biltong - United Kingdom
Trekboer Traditional Biltong is made by a South African family in the United Kingdom. We are not a business or an enterprise; we are just a family making traditional biltong for our own enjoyment, and we may make some available for sale on an as-needed basis.
Our mission is to create a traditional biltong that Meats and Beats the taste of any biltong found in South Africa.
We start by using South Africa’s leading brand of biltong spice, thus ensuring a safe and stable product. We then add our own proprietary blend of seasonings, herbs, and spices, a family recipe originating in South Africa that has been used for generations. We use premium British Beef, as well as Venison sourced in the wilds of Scotland.
I’m in my sixties now, and fondly reflect on being the age of nineteen, in South Africa, doing National Service. One day, Sergeant-Major Kriek walked in, stating he needed a few volunteers to do a task outside the base. Our mates had advised us never to volunteer, as it was generally a bad idea!
Anyway, I volunteered, and learned that “Die Generaal was op pad om kudu in die bos te skiet, en ons moed gereed maak om biltong te maak!”
“Die Generaal” managed to harvest a large kudu with spectacular horns, and that was my first hands-on experience making biltong!
This experience was foundational, as I learned all aspects of biltong making, including hygiene, food safety, the importance of pH, ratios of spices, the drying process, and the skill in achieving the traditional biltong taste that we all yearn for. Needless to say, some of the biltong never made its way to the general!
We are based on the edge of the farms in Northumberland, fairly close to the Scottish Borders.
